Verizon Communications Inc., or commonly known on its brand name Verizon, is an American telecommunications and broadband company. Verizon Communications Inc., with its base in New York City and incorporated in Delaware, was formed in 30th of June, 2000, with the merger of Bell Atlantic Corp. and GTE Corp. The merger between Bell Atlantic Corp. and GTE Corp., which formed Verizon, became one of the largest business deals in corporate history. The definitive merger agreement was made on July 27, 1998.
The merger was approved nearly two years later, after reviews and approvals by the Bell Atlantic and GTE shareowners, and after receiving the approval of 27 state regulatory commissions and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and various international agencies also had to give their clearance for the merger of the two companies.
